Guide to Giving Vehicles

Giving vehicles are how people give. Most people give using their credit card, or a checking account. But for over a century now, some philanthropists have organized their giving through a variety of more complex “giving vehicles.” The best known is the Foundation but those who want to give money away to causes will have a myriad of choices available to them ranging from checking accounts to LLCs. From DAFs to CLATs. The good news for fundraisers is that these giving vehicles sometimes make their priorities and giving plans clear in advance which makes it easier to plan your grant calendar. In this session we will kick off our LEARN track with our founder Dave talking with firstyear evaluator and philanthropy professional Doria Josma.

Dave and Doria will guide our guests through the most commonly used giving vehicles:

1. Commonly held vehicles for individuals:
Cash, Checking Accounts/Credit Cards/Debit Cards/Mobile Giving

2. Planned Giving, Donations of stocks/bonds, and other less-liquid assets

3. Foundations and Trusts

4. Donor-Advised Funds

Guides: Dave Moss, Founder of the Unfunded List and Doria Josma, Unfunded List Evaluator and External Affairs Associate at the Association of Black Foundation Executives.
